The Northern Lights and God

July 16, 2020

Have you ever seen the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, as they’re officially called? I haven’t. I’ve seen them in movies and books. My husband saw them and described them to me. I know they’re real and very beautiful. But I haven’t personally seen them.

Imagine trying to picture the magnificence of the Northern Lights if you had never seen a picture of them or heard how they are described. To me, that would be pretty difficult.

Is it just as difficult, sometimes, to picture a God that we’ve never seen? Yes, people saw Jesus. But, we—you and I—didn’t. Yet, we’ve read about Him. We know he was and is real.

What about people that have never read about Jesus? Would it be like trying to picture the Northern Lights, without having heard of or seen them?

Sometimes such magnificence is hard to describe. Our God is so vast and overwhelming. Perhaps the best way to start telling someone about him is the simple fact that “God is love”.

1 John 4:7-9 (NIV) says, “Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.”

I hope we all have an opportunity to share with someone, the greatness of our God.
